All forms of traditional acupuncture have their origin in Chinese medicine theory, which is developed around Qi, the flow of energy through the body, in pathways that are correspondent to the organ system. These pathways are commonly referred to as meridians. The nature of the flow of energy through the meridians is understood to be in a constant state of movement, shifting stresses but always seeking balance.

Acupuncture is a method of decongesting blockages and aiding the fluid movement of Qi, hence maintaining balance, and the protection of the system against the ill effects of any deficient or excessive accumulation. Each session begins with a diagnosis of the system which offers insight and direction appear to be local problems are often symptoms of systemic imbalance. However, sometimes local problems are local problems, such as accidents or injury due to overuse.

Moxibustion, the burning of specially prepared mugwort, is a traditional therapy used to create local heat, thus increased circulation, in an areas of the body where a local increase in metabolism is believed to benefit the conditon. Direct moxibustion, in addition to local effects, can increase blood cell counts, strengthen adrenal glands, decrease blood acidosis and stimulate heart function. Moxibustion can also be burned in a tuft at the head of the needle and is called warming needle treatment. The conduction of heat to specific points amplifies the energetic and physiological stimulation of key points. Cupping and herbal remedies are used to support the acupuncture treatment.
