Homeopathy has been used worldwide for over 200 years. It is a holistic system of medicine in that it treats the whole person. This means that all of you - your physical symptoms and your emotional and mental make-up - are recognized as being important and connected, not separate from one another. It is you, as a person, who is treated, rather than a disease.
Homeopathy views a sick person as having a dynamic disturbance of the vital force: a disturbance that underlies standard medical diagnoses of named diseases like colitis, allergies, hypertension etc. Homeopathy works by stimulating the body's own natural healing ability, resonating with the whole person, thereby bringing your health to its optimum.
In 1796, before the explosion of pharmaceutical medicine, a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, discovered an approach to restoring health, which he called Homeopathy. This is a Greek word meaning "similar suffering." Hahnemann came up with the "law of similars" - "simila similibus curntur" meaning "like cures like." It works on a principle somewhat not entirey unlike inocculation, where a substance that can cause certain symptoms can also be used to cure them.
For example, a cold with symptoms of watery eyes and a runny nose could be helped by a remedy (homeopathic medicine) made from onion (allium cepa), as this substance can cause similar symptoms. However, someone with a cold with slightly different symptoms will be treated with a different remedy, as the remedy has to be individually chosen.
Unlike conventional (allopathic) medicine, which tends to suppress symptoms rather than cure them, homeopathic remedies support healing on a deep level. Remedies are prescribed for the whole person and not only for a particular condition or disease.
This principle also explains why six people with arthritis are each likely to be prescribed a different remedy - their arthritic symptoms will be different as will their overall state of health and the way they cope with and experience life.
Remedies are made mainly from natural substances like herbs, roots, leaves, minerals, or animal products. They are prepared in a very special way according to the law of similars, or the principle that a substance causing certain symptoms in healthy people can cure those same symptoms in an ill person. This leads to an individualized remedy designed to optimize health and to stimulate the organism to regain its balance. They are safe for everyone, and can be taken in conjunction with allopathic (conventional) medicines if necessary.
Homeopathy can be helpful in a wide range of conditions, from acute illness like colds, flu and minor injuries, to chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, ADD, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, cancer, and many others. It is safe and effective for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Children are especially responsive to the effects of homeopathic medicine.
There are many scientific studies investigating the clinical effects of homeopathy. Homeopathy has been shown to be effective in conditions as diverse as mild traumatic brain injury to acute diarrhea in children.
In general, an initial homeopathic consultation takes anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours. During the initial interview a thorough going history is taken, which includes a history of illness, specific subjective experience of symptoms, food preferences, sensitivities to foods, climate, social environments as well as fluctuations in moods and emotional trends. Following the initial consultation, the practitioner will either prescribe a remedy or take some time with the case before determining the first choice of remedies. This is due to the fact that some remedy pictures are clearer than others, depending on what the person is able to articulate. For this reason, a second, follow-up consultation may be required before the first remedy is chosen.
Once the remedy is chosen, some time will pass before the remedy's action on the person is evaluated. A cure is considered complete when all aspects of the person are elevated, such as mental, emotional and physical health. Clear and ongoing improvement of both health and vitality is the objective.
Homeopathy itself is not expensive, nor is it dangerous in any way. It is used extensively in Europe, particularly in Greece and England, where it has been favoured by the royal family for decades, as well as being in very common practice in India. A century ago in the United States most allopathic doctors used, or where familiar with, homeopathy and its application. In general, the growth of the pharmaceutical industry and the power of that empire has had the effect of diminishing the authority of homeopathic practice and principles, with the authority of "scientific methodology" which targets the micro functions of the body, as opposed to the practice of homeopathy that looks at the whole of the individual as a unit. Whole and individual are two key words in determining homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy is not a one size fits all modality.
Once the right remedy is chosen for a person, its action will be effective for several months. The original remedy may be repeated some months later or a new presentation may determine a change of treatment. Each individual is unique, but the objective is to work backwards through the history of the person, like an archeological excavation, lifting off the burdens of history, to reveal the full health of the vital force, bringing back the native vitality of the person. |
